High school basketball roundup: Cotter, Flippin, Viola teams win district championships
Roundup of district championship basketball games played over the weekend:
Cotter 58, Flippin 36: The Lady Warriors added a 2A-1 District championship to their conference title by running past a Flippin team that had defeated them twice this season.
Junior Kate Cheek totaled 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead Cotter (20-4), and sophomore Becca Benedict scored 10 in the second quarter when the Lady Warriors posted a 16-0 run.
Senior Leah Still scored 10 to lead Flippin, which won the district title last season after falling twice to Cotter in the regular season.
Cotter will open regional tournament play Wednesday at Magazine, while Flippin will open on Thursday.

Melbourne 52, Salem 47: The Lady Bearkatz held off the Lady Greyhounds for the third time this season in the 2A-2 championship. Chelsea Hamilton scored 17 and Marleigh Sellars added 11 for Salem (17-6). Melbourne (25-1) will host next week’s regional tournament.
Viola 65, West Side 54: No. 2 seed Viola won the rubber match against No. 1 West Side Greers Ferry with a road victory in the 1A-2 District final. Mason Luna scored 21, Gage Harris notched 17 and Bryson Luna added 15 to pace the Longhorns (30-6), who open regional play Wednesday at Brockwell.
Malachi Miller tossed in 26 to pace West Side (22-5), which will play Thursday at Brockwell.
Flippin 76, Alpena 36: The Bobcats won their third straight 2A-1 District championship by posting their third consecutive mercy-rule victory of the league tournament. Paul Hart scored 31 points, and Dale Smyser added 17 to lead Flippin (30-4), which opens regional tournament play Wednesday.
Rural Special 52, Viola 42: The Lady Rebels added the 1A-2 District championship to their regular season title by knocking down 8 of 13 3-point attempts. Abbey Linville led Rural Special (24-3) with 21 points, and Gabbie Welch added 16. Sami McCandlis led Viola (27-7) with 18 points and A.J. McCandlis added 13.
Mammoth Spring 67, Maynard 29: Freshman Brynn Washam scored 19 as the Lady Bears rolled to the 1A-3 championship. Megyn Upton and Shelby VanGinhoven added 15 and 10, respectively, for Mammoth Spring (13-11).
