Booked: Where to find something to read in the River Valley
Ask a reader what their favorite book is, and they'll struggle to tell you. You're better off asking what their favorite bookstore is, here are the options in the area.
Chapters on Main
This bookstore has a coffee shop in the back and tables for those who want to enjoy the books immediately.
There are three levels to this shop. The main level has new books, local authors, the coffee shop as well as used and antique books. The upper level is a small children's book area, while the lower level contains the majority of their used book genres.
Chapters on Main used to be Brandenburg Books until 2016 when it was bought by new owners Debbie and Alan Foliart as part of the revitalization of downtown Van Buren.
While they are closed on Sundays, they are open Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Chapters on Main is located at 816 Main St. in Van Buren.
The one chain book store in town has entered the used-book front. While they do not have a dedicated section to used books, they have special stickers to note which books are gently used. There is also a section for used DVDs.
There is an option to join their Millionaire's Club for $25 per year in order to get a discount on every purchase.
Books-a-Million also has a coffee shop inside called Joe's Muggs where you can enjoy some drinks and snacks while you work at one of several tables both inside and outside.
The store has new releases and classics as well as journals and calendars. By far the largest book store in the area, there is a wide selection of kids, young adult, fiction and non-fiction books.
Books-a-Million is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is located at 4145 Phoenix Ave. in Fort Smith.
"There's been a Snooper's forever," said owner Janice Wade, who bought the store 21 years ago.
The oldest bookshop in the area, Snooper's is truly a bookstore that is back in time. Snooper's is a cash-only establishment with books from every genre. There are two main rooms. The one to the right is largely filled with hardback books while the room you first walk into has mostly paperbacks.
Snooper's is located at 208 Towson Ave. in Fort Smith and is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Bookish has two locations in downtown Fort Smith. Their first location is on the corner of North 10th Street and North B Street. This location has a slightly larger selection than their second location at the Bakery District on North 7th Street.
This store prides itself on being an independent book store with local authors and events geared towards the community. Bookish has been open since August 2018.
Both locations feature a "staff picks" section where each staff member selects a book they think customers should read.
The 10th Street location is open Sunday 10 a.m to 4 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Bakery District location is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
