The River Valley Roller Girls begin their season Saturday hosting a pair of teams from Joplin, Mo., at the Fort Smith Convention Center.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the first bout begins at 6 p.m. Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders will be on hand as the special guest whistle blower to start the event. The RVRG are hosting the event to promote The Call of Fort Smith by sponsoring a diaper drive. Each person who bring a package of diapers will receive a free raffle ticket.

The Derby Diamonds (comprising of the veteran players) will square off against the Mo-Kan All-Starz, while the Rough Cuts will face the Mo-Kan Blockade.

The River Valley Roller Girls will be on the road for two events in March, before hosting teams from Fayetteville and Poteau on April 19.

Tickets for Saturday’s events are $12 at the door or $5 with military ID. Children 10-under are free with an adult.

The RVRG is a non-profit organization that competes locally and in a multi-state area in flat track roller derby. The group works with other non-profit agencies, school groups, and other organizations that help strengthen women and families in the River Valley.

The Call is a support and resource group for families looking to serve as foster parents or adopt.
