Playing their old rival Greenwood for the first time this year, Alma was a little extra fired-up Friday at the River City Rumble Invitational at the Field of Dreams.
The Airedalettes were loud and enthusiastic from the start and rallied for a 3-2 win in extra innings after the time limit had been reached.
"We talked about keeping our heads in the game and doing your job, whether that is cheering in the dugout or making the right play in the field," Alma coach Charla Parrish said. "We did a pretty good job of that. Playing Greenwood again was just a little bit of extra motivation."
All 16 teams in the tournament played two games Friday and will play two more games this morning to set the final brackets for championship play. Alma, Bentonville, Sheridan and Vilonia all recorded two wins Friday.
Shaylee Sevenstar lined a solid single to center to score the winning run for Alma. The Airedalettes tied the game in the sixth with time nearly out on doubles by Brooke Sevenstar and Taylor Thornbrugh.
Greenwood led 2-0 after four innings against Alma as Marika McCreany lined a two-RBI hit up the middle. The Bulldogs had runners at first and third with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but a bunt popped up into the glove of Alma third baseman Brooke Hoffsomer, who threw to first for a double play.
"We are getting some good games in against some good teams," Parrish said. "It’s a long day (Saturday) but it should be good experience."
Earlier Friday, Alma beat Rogers Heritage 5-1 as Brooke Sevenstar and Cierra Rainwater had home runs.
Greenwood defeated Springdale Har-Ber, 6-3, earlier in the day.
Southside beat Cedarville 11-0 in an early game as well.
