FAYETTEVILLE — The Arkansas baseball team has selected outfielder and former Van Buren standout Tyler Spoon as one of three captains for the 2014 along with catcher Jake Wise and pitcher Jalen Beeks .

Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn announced the selections Monday.

Spoon was named a freshman All-American after hitting .288 with 4 home runs and a team-high 49 RBI. He was the only Arkansas player to start every game and made only one error in 112 chances in the outfield.

Beeks appeared in a team-high 29 games in his first season as a Razorback in 2013 and went 6-2 with a 2.20 earned run average in 41 innings pitched. Beeks, who is from Prairie Grove, went 3-1 with a 1.83 ERA in Southeastern Conference play.

Wise — who was a captain in 2013 — started 52 games and hit .212 with 3 home runs with 23 RBI. The Houston native, who underwent Tommy John surgery in the offseason, has started 112 games in his Arkansas career.

Arkansas will start preseason practice Jan. 24. The season begins on Feb. 14.
