FAYETTEVILLE — Guard Ky Madden has been suspended from the Arkansas basketball team because of a violation of team rules.
Arkansas coach Mike Anderson announced Madden’s suspension on Friday afternoon, a few hours before the Razorbacks open the exhibition season against Missouri Southern. Madden will not play in the team’s two exhibition games or the season opener against SIU-Edwardsville next Friday.
"Holding our student-athletes accountable on and off the court is a big part of my philosophy as a coach, and also in helping them grow up to be men," Anderson said in a statement. "(Madden) will be suspended for our two exhibition games and the season opener. I’m certainly disappointed in (Madden), but he understands that he’s not only letting himself down, but he’s also letting his teammates down because we are all one family."
It’s the third time Madden has been suspended during his Arkansas career. He missed an exhibition game during his freshman season and also was suspended for Arkansas’ loss at South Carolina last January.
Madden, who averaged 4.2 points and 2.4 rebounds a game last season, is being counted on to play point guard for the Razorbacks this season. Anderson said last week the 6-foot-5 Madden had made "great strides" as a ball-handler.
"Ky works harder this year. He’s more active," Anderson said. "Ky’s a really good player, and you guys will have the opportunity to see that this year. …
"He’s a rare body type with how tall he is playing point guard. So we expect a lot from Ky and he’s been playing really well."
