Brooks Coatney informed his players on Tuesday that he was leaving Van Buren as head football coach.

As of Friday morning, no formal resignation had been submitted.

Coatney, a Greenwood native, was the head football coach at Van Buren for four years, compiling a 10-31 record. He will join coach Daryl Patton’s crew at Fayetteville in March. Coatney will be the wide receivers coach and the passing game coordinator for the Bulldogs. He will also be listed as the assistant head coach.

Coatney replaces former offensive coordinator Zak Clark, who is the new Springdale head coach. Fayetteville’s former offensive line coach, Bryant Davis, went with Clark to Springdale.

In 2014, Van Buren finished 4-6 as members of the 7A/6A-Central.

Coatney took over the program in 2011 after Mike Lee left to take the Athletics Director position at Bryant.

Coatney was at Ozark (10-11-1) as head coach for two years before taking over at Van Buren. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Central Arkansas Christian and Bryant.

The Van Buren School District is also searching for a new superintendent. It is unknown at this point if that search will impact the hiring of a new head football coach.

Bentonville is also looking for a new head coach after the announced retirement of Barry Lunney. As of Feb. 12, there were 26 applicants for that job with some from seven different states.
