Golden Suns sweeps UAM

RUSSELLVILLE — Senior Sara Motsinger led the offense with 12 kills (.375 hitting percentage) and two blocks, senior Amber Cerrillos paced the team in assists with 30, and sophomore Morgan McKellar led the defense with 16 digs and three service aces as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (6-3, 1-0 GAC) beat the University of Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms (4-6, 0-1 GAC) 3-0 in tonight’s match.

The Golden Suns swept the Cotton Blossoms 28-26, 25-18, 25-14.

Junior Emily Todd had ten kills, ten digs, and two service aces. Sophomore Katie Huff had six kills and freshman Kaylee Konsella pulled out five kills.

Senior Tori Bozzo led UAM with seven kills on 34 attempts with five errors,while junior Christina Rini added five kills and four block assists. They were aided mostly from senior Amy Bazemore, who collected a team-high 17 assists.

Junior Jessica Cuba and senior Tusalava Kuaea paced the UAM defense with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Golden Suns will play against Dallas Baptist University at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Tucker Coliseum.

UALR’s Begic repeats as SBC top player

NEW ORLEANS — After being named All-Tournament at New Mexico State, junior Edina Begic was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week Monday (Sept. 16) for the second time this season. At NMSU, UALR defeated Northern Illinois in straight sets and the host Aggies in four sets on Friday (Sept. 13) before knocking off Southern Utah in five sets Saturday (Sept. 14).

Thanks to a weekend where Begic tallied 72 kills (six kills per set), she upped her season average to 5.35 kills per set. Begic continues to lead the conference by 1.54 kills per set, ahead of Trojans sophomore teammate Sonja Milanovic (3.81 kills per set).

She tallied 23 kills against Northern Illinois before following that up with 18 spikes against the host Aggies later that same today. To close out the weekend, Begic slammed to the court 30 kills against Southern Utah for her sixth 30+ kills match for her career.

This is the fifth time the SBC has named Begic Offensive Player of the Week in the last two seasons.

Hendrix sweeps CBD in two

CONWAY — The Hendrix College volleyball team swept a pair of matches from crosstown opponent Central Baptist College at A.R. Redden Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. The Warriors (9-5) defeated the Lady Mustangs (2-8) 25-14, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-16, 25-17, 25-20.

Freshman middle blocker Grace Griffin hit .500 with seven kills for the Warriors and freshman right side Natalie Masten had five kills. Freshman middle Jen Karnes added four kills and three blocks. Junior libero Ella Concavage-Nasar led the defense with 11 digs and freshman Leila Matsumoto had nine digs and three aces. Senior setter Zoe Calhoun recorded eight assists.

In the second match, Karnes hit .421 with 10 kills and four blocks and Griffin had eight kills while hitting .429. Masten chipped in six kills. COncavage-Nasar came up with 14 digs to go with four aces and freshman Holyn Duyck had 15 assists and six digs.

Hendrix will go on the road for a Southern Athletic Association match at Millsaps College on Saturday.

Harding takes down Henderson State

SEARCY – The Harding volleyball team opened Great American Conference play with a 3-0 win over Henderson State on Tuesday. The Lady Bisons improved to 6-4 on the season and 1-0 in the GAC.

Harding is now 15-2 in home openers since joining the NCAA in 1997.

The Lady Bisons were led by senior outside hitter Mollie Arnold who had 20 kills and had a season-high .472 hitting percentage. It was the eighth time this season Arnold has posted 20 or more kills performance.

Senior defensive specialist Lisa Copeland had 20 digs to lead the HU defense. It was the sixth time this season she has had 20 or more digs in a match.

Henderson State (1-7, 0-1 GAC) was led by senior outside hitter Cheyenne Derr who had seven kills. The Lady Reddies had six blocks in the match, led by junior middle blocker Cherise Austin who had five.

Set three was all Harding. The Lady Bisons had 17 kills in the set as they won 25-16.

Harding will be back in action this weekend as they participate in the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Tournament. The Lady Bisons will face Dallas Baptist and UAFS on Friday and then wrap up the tournament on Saturday as they face No. 11 Washburn and Texas Woman’s.

A-State defeats rival

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Arkansas State volleyball team improved to 4-7 on the season with a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22) win over rival Memphis (6-4) at Elma Roane Fieldhouse Tuesday night.

Sadie Clark led the Red Wolves in kills with 11, while Sullivan and Kemp added nine of their own. Jackie Gerig led the team in assists with 44 and added 14 digs. Megan Baska paced the Red Wolves with 29 digs and Sullivan led A-State with six blocks during the match.

The Red Wolves return to action Friday against UAB in the Belmont Bruin Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
