Red Wolves head to Big River Meet

JONESBORO — The Arkansas State University men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action this Friday (Sept. 13) afternoon as the Red Wolves participate in Saint Louis University’s Big River Cross Country Festival meet in St. Louis, Mo.

A-State, which was idle this past weekend, will be running in its second meet of the2013 season. The women’s 5K race will get underway at 4:30 p.m. (CT) on the Central Fields Course in Forest Park while the men’s event is a 6K and commences at 5:15 p.m. (CT).

The meet will mark a homecoming of sorts for several A-State runners on the men’s and women’s squads, who hail from Missouri and Illinois. Freshman Denton Postlewait, sophomore Andre Walker, and freshman Mark Talarico are from Missouri or Illinois. On thewomen’s side, juniors Heather Hammett, Kristina Aubert, and Heather Newberry along with freshmen Holly Sando and Brianne Murphy are from the area.

"This race location provides the family and friends of these runners an easier commute to support them," said A-State Cross Country Head Coach Kyle Chandler. "For the races, I’m anxious to see how our teams continue to mature and work together in competing against teams from this region."

The Arkansas State women’s team entered this fall ranked 10th in the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USFTCCCA) 2013 Preseason NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country South Central Region Rankings.


A-State heads for Alabama tournament

The Arkansas State volleyball team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Hampton Inn Bama Bash to face UT Martin and host Alabama on Sept. 13 before squaring off against Nicholls State Sept. 14.

A-State faces UT Martin (6-2) Friday at 2 p.m. followed by Alabama (4-2) at 7 p.m. The Red Wolves take on Nicholls State (2-4) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Senior Libero Megan Baska recorded 57 digs over the three matches in the Ole Miss Magnolia Invitational and is now second on the all-time digs list for a career at Arkansas State with 1,674. She passed Tessa Millikan’s 1,669 career digs with her 15th dig in the Ole Miss match Sept. 7.

Senior Sadie Clark leads the team in kills with 85 on the season for a 3.27 kills per set average. She’s also added 10 digs, four blocks, and four assists. Clark led the Red Wolves with 47 kills on a .200 hitting percentage and a 3.62 kills per set average over the weekend at the Magnolia Invitational. For her efforts she was named to the Magnolia Invitational All-Tournament team. Freshman Kelsey Reis leads A-State freshmen in kills (33) and total blocks (16). She leads the team in block solos with three.

UAM set for big weekend

MONTICELLO – Six collegiate volleyball teams will make the trip to Southeast Arkansas this weekend to play a total of 13 matches combined over the next three days as the University of Arkansas at Monticello CottonBlossoms are set to host the Hampton Inn Invitational.

The tournament begins this Thursday, September 12 with UAM taking on formerGulf South Conference opponent, West Alabama at 7 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.

Six other teams will be in Monticello this weekend. Two Great American Conference opponents, Henderson State and Southern Arkansas will make the trip, along with Union and West Alabama out of the Gulf South Conference, Missouri Southern out of the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and Kentucky Wesleyan out of the Great MidWest Athletic Conference.
