Lady Bisons fall in exhibition to A-State

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Harding women’s basketball team fell to NCAA Division I Arkansas State 79-68 on Monday in an exhibition game.

It’s HU’s only exhibition game before the start of the season on Nov. 8 at Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Junior guard Montana Lewis led the Lady Bisons in scoring with 17 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Junior forward Arielle Saunders captured a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior guard Kristen Celsor had 13 points.

Harding led Arkansas State by as much as seven (15-8) in the first 10 minutes of the game. Then the Red Wolves took over going on a 14-0 run to lead 22-15 with 6:57 left in the first half.

Arkansas State was led by Aundrea Gamble who had 30 points, hitting 10-of-13 from the field and 9-of-12 free throws. She also had seven rebounds and six assists.


A-State places seventh at invitational

MIROMAR LAKES, Fla. — The Arkansas State men’s golf team shot a final-round 298 Monday at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational to complete the three-round tournament at the Miromar Lakes Golf Club with a combined 890 that placed it seventh among 13 teams.

The Red Wolves, led by top-25 finishes from Chance Holden and Matthew Loiacano, ended Sunday’s play in fifth place after recording a 298 and 294 for the first and second rounds, respectively. A-State concluded the tournament only one stroke behind sixth-place Ohio and within two strokes of fifth-place Georgetown.

Chance Holden led the Red Wolves with a 220 total, which placed him tied for 20th. Holden, who collected his second top-20 finish of the season, was responsible for the lowest round by an A-State player with a 71 for the final 18 holes. Matthew Loiacano had his best showing of the season, tying for 22nd place with a 221. His total score included a season-best 72 for the second round.

The Red Wolves will play their final tournament this fall Nov. 4-5, when they host the ASU Fall Beach Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala.

UCA finish eighth at UAB Fall Beach Bash

GULF SHORES, Ala. — The University of Central Arkansas Bears sit in eighth place after one round of the UAB Fall Beach Bash being played at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club Lakes to Marsh Golf Course.

Austin Peay leads the 12-team field at 295.

UCA freshman Elisa Axelsen and sophomore Sarah Brown are tied for 10th after each shot an opening-round 2-over 74.


Harding earns No. 10 in first regional rankings

SEARCY – The Harding football team is ranked No. 10 in the first edition of the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Rankings, released Monday by the NCAA.

Super Region 3 is comprised of teams from the Great American Conference, the MIAA, and the Northern Sun Conference.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the top six teams from Super Region 3 advance to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

Harding advanced to the playoffs for the first time in 2012 after concluding the season with a 9-1 record.

The Bisons will look to climb the rankings this Saturday when they take on Southeastern Oklahoma. Kickoff in Durant, Okla., is at 2 p.m.

The second of three regional rankings will be released next Monday.

Reddies fifth in first Super Region 3 ranking

Despite being ranked No. 4 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Top 25, Henderson State is ranked fifth in the first NCAA Division II Super Region 3 rankings released Monday afternoon.

The Reddies, playing in one of the most difficult regions in Division II, are one of 10 teams still unbeaten.

Henderson State finished the 2012 season ranked No. 2 in the region and hosted a second-round game. The Reddies earned a bye in the first-round last year.

ESPN3 to televise A-State game at ULM on Nov. 9

JONESBORO — The Arkansas State University football program has already been featured on television several times this 2013 season and will continue to do so as ESPN has selected the Red Wolves’ Nov. 9 game at the Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) to be televised on

The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) contest will start at 6 p.m. from ULM’s Malone Stadium in Monroe, La. Arkansas State, under head coach Bryan Harsin, will visit the South Alabama Jaguars Saturday in a 6:30 p.m. conference match-up also slated to air on prior to its encounter against the ULM Warhawks.
