Weather hinders instate contest
JONESBORO — The Arkansas State University men’s basketball home game this Tuesday evening against Lyon College has been postponed.
Lyon College, located in Batesville elected not to make the trip to Arkansas State because of poor weather and driving conditions.
Both schools have agreed to reschedule the instate non-conference contest for Feb. 25 in A-State’s Convocation Center.
Lady Bisons moves back to No. 6
SEARCY — The Harding women’s basketball team moved back up to No. 6 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches’ Poll released on Tuesday. It’s the fifth straight week Harding has been ranked in the top 10.
Harding is 19-1 on the season. The Lady Bisons defeated Southern Nazarene last Thursday 94-57 and had a conference bye on Saturday.
Harding is the highest ranked team from the central region which is made up of the Great American Conference, the MIAA and the Northern Sun.
It’s the second time this season Harding has been ranked No. 6 in the poll. It’s also the highest the Lady Bisons have ever been ranked.
The Lady Bisons will be back in action on Thursday as they host Northwestern Oklahoma at the Rhodes Field House at 5:30 p.m.
UAM’s Wilson earns second GAC weekly honors
RUSSELLVILLE — University of Arkansas at Monticello senior forward Brandon Wilson has been named the Great American Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Boll Weevils to a pair of league road wins over the past week.
Wilson is the first men’s player to earn a second weekly award from the conference office. The Rayville, La. native averaged 17 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as the Weevils grabbed a 55-51 win at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday night and then posted their largest conference win of the season in terms of point differential in a 68-52 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford.
Harding misses Oklahoma tourney
SEARCY — The tournament that the Harding softball team was scheduled to participate in this weekend has been canceled due to weather. The Lady Bisons were scheduled to open their 2014 campaign at the Southeastern Oklahoma State Tournament in Durant, Okla.
Harding will have to wait another week before they get underway. The Lady Bisons are slotted to participate in the Arkansas-Monticello Tournament held in Bentonville on Feb. 14-16.
Wilson earns first GAC pitcher honors
RUSSELLVILLE — University of Arkansas at Monticello senior Courtney Wilson has been named the first Great American Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the 2014 season.
Wilson tossed a three-hit shutout in UAM’s 2-0 win over Christian Brothers in the second half of this past Saturday’s season-opening double header sweep over the Lady Bucs. She tossed 89 pitches, struck out two and only allowed one walk.
The Inverness, Miss., native threw two perfect innings and left runners in scoring position three times to preserve the shutout.
