VBFA began the season with a win on Monday at the Russellville Junior High tournament by defeated Cabot Red 33-18.
The Pointers face Alma Thursday at 8 p.m. in the semifinal round.
VBFA had nine different players contribute to the scoring as Caleb Salisbury paced the team with eight points. Ryan Hewett added six and Isaac Lipe tossed in four. Tyler Graham, Koby Fry and Kourtland Mondier had three points each.
The Pointers led 8-6 after the first quarter and was up 17-10 by halftime. The team had a 22-12 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Alma 54, LR Christian 44 (Boys’)
The Airedales had five players score eight or more points and four were in double digits as the team won its first game of the season.
"It was nice to get a victory against a quality team in our first game out this year," said coach Eddie Corder. "I thought we played well on defense, and our offense will get smoother as the year progresses.
Ged Dyer and Kade Wood (six rebounds) had 12 points each. Brayden Johnson (six rebounds) and Garrison Jensen (five assists) each added 11 point apiece. Christian Stahler tossed in eight.
Mulberry 61, Western Yell County 29 (Women’s)
The Lady Yellow Jackets won their second straight game and two players scored more than 20 points each after Friday’s rout at "Cotton" Havener Gymnasium.
Rebecca Treat scored 22 points and Brittany Edwards added 21 as Mulberry improved to 5-1 overall.
The Lady Yellow Jackets jumped to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter and had a 14-point lead at the break, 33-19. Mulberry extended its lead, 45-22, in the third.
Taylor Naegle tossed in seven points for Mulberry.
Mulberry 67, Western Yell County 54 (Men’s)
Luke Anderson scored 20 points and the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-3 overall after holding off a Wolverine rally in Friday’s win.
Keegan Brake added 15 points as nine different players contributed.
Mulberry led 27-14 to start the second quarter, but the Wolverines tied up the game 37-37 at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets outscored WYC 30-14 the duration of the game. Trevor Martin had nine points for Mulberry, while Shawn Price and Kendall McClarkin finished with six and five points respectively.
Dardanelle 53, Cedarville 28 (Men’s)
Travis Shelly scored 10 points in Thursday’s season-opening loss.
