The Arkansas Activities Association announced Friday an update of its COVID-19 basketball guidelines for the 2020-21 high school basketball season.
One of the big changes for the upcoming season is that multi-school events — in or out of state — such as tournaments, classics, showcases, etc., will not be allowed this season.
The AAA did allow for modifications to team schedules, however, allowing an increased amount of regular season games to be played between two schools. Non-football schools are now allowed 34 high school varsity basketball games and 28 junior high varsity games this season. Football schools are allowed 26 high school varsity basketball games and 24 junior high varsity games.
Other modifications as far as pregame protocols, team bench placements, pre- and post-game ceremonies, uniform and equipment protocols, concession stand protocols, and timeouts have also made to the rules and regulations, which will be similar to what are already being practiced in volleyball.
Facility modifications include:
Family groups must be spaced 6 feet apart.
Have a separate entrance and exit point for facilities to avoid congestion and aid in social distancing.
Create and display COVID-19 information signage throughout the venue.
Use tape, paint and signage within the bleachers and around the facility to mark areas where spectators may gather to maintain social distancing. Specify where spectators and participants may sit.
Everyone inside the facility is required to wear a mask at all times, except players who are actively participating.
Appropriate social distancing must be maintained on sidelines and benches during contests and events. Bench personnel must sit within a minimum distance.
The basketball guidelines can be viewed in their entirety on the AAA's COVID-19 webpage.
"After working closely with the Arkansas Department of Health and the governor's committee for high school sports, the basketball guidelines have been approved and are now available on the AAA COVID-19 webpage," the AAA said in a press release. "Please check the website frequently and continue to follow all ADH directives in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19 this season."
