It’s not uncommon for siblings or even cousins to compete alongside each other in high school athletics within Crawford County.

However, for sisters Taylor and Jordan Hightower, the path took a more scenic route since Taylor waited until her senior year to join the Cedarville track team and even run in a relay event with your younger sibling.

“Getting to run with my sister at the meets we went to this year has been a highlight of my season,” said Taylor. “You shouldn’t wait until your senior year to try a new sport and always have fun in whatever sport you compete in.”

Jordan echoes the sentiment about trying new sports. “I didn’t think I would like to run track, but I love it,” she said. “I like running and I am competitive. I like to see if I can beat my own times at each race I compete in.”

Jordan has been running since the seventh grade when some of the older girls wanted her to run track with them. She began with the 800 and the mile. Later she added the 400-meter relay and the long jump.

“My Aunt Becky inspires me. She is good at running marathons and she is always training for different ones,” Jordan said. “Also, Hunter Woodhall because he has overcome so much to be a great athlete.”

Jordan had a nagging injury last year and kept her from running in multiple meets but has since fully recovered. She also finished first a couple of years back in the 1,600-meter run in the district meet.

Remer has been after Taylor to run since she was in the eighth grade and she finally came out her senior year. The coach expected Taylor would want to run sprints, but she told me she wanted to try distance.

“Coach Remer has always encouraged me to run and I wanted to try something new my senior year,” said Taylor. “He pushes us to do our best and try new events. He is always confident in us and is always encouraging.”

Taylor enjoyed the running and competing aspects of track. She played softball as a freshman and has competed in the rodeo for most of her life.

Cedarville just had Taylor for two meets, the state indoor and Booneville before spring sports were shut down due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-18. However, Taylor’s times were improving from the off-season all the way until the shutdown.

“We are all very supportive of each other in our events and we work well together in our team events,” said Taylor.

“We are always pushing each other to do our best,” said Jordan in regards to running with her sister. “It was fun getting to run in some of the same races with her.”

“Both are hard workers and would run any event I asked them to,” said Remer. “I think it is pretty cool they got to compete alongside one another. Hopefully it’s something that stays with them.”

Taylor is planning to go to Arkansas Tech in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing.
