Tyler Wilson blew away the competition this week the way he did as a prep quarterback at Greenwood and with the University of Arkansas.
Wilson picked up 62.1% of the votes in Twitter poll pitting four random athletes in the Greatest All-Time Athlete from the Fort Smith Area poll contest.
Wilson, who played parts of five seasons for the Razorbacks, edged former Arkansas baseball standout Matt Vinson of Alma and Northside’s Cam Fleming and Sallisaw’s Athena McCoy.
A star quarterback and baseball player for the Airedales, Vinson picked up 19.6% of the votes.
With the win, Wilson advances to the second round next month. Wilson was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2013 and spent time with the Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals.
One of former coach Rick Jones’ first star quarterbacks, Wilson threw for over 8,000 yards and 93 touchdowns. A stellar baseball player, Wilson went 11-0 as a senior with 92 strikeouts in 64 innings while compiling a 32-9 career record.
Wilson threw for 7,765 yards and 52 touchdowns during his time with the Hogs, including a 24 and 21 touchdown passes, respectively, in 2011-12. Wilson played for both Bobby Petrino and John L. Smith.
The Times Record will continue its voting for the Greatest All-Time Athlete from the Fort Smith Area with several more upcoming opening-round match-ups on its Twitter page pitting four random athletes. There are 128 athletes vying for the No. 1 slot.
