Magazine went to Mountainburg with a chance to stay in contention to share a conference title but the Dragons weren’t in a sharing mood.
With a 40-8 win, the Dragons (7-1, 5-0) earned no less than a share of the 2A-4 title going into this week’s game with Hector.
Magazine meanwhile drops to 4-4 and 3-2 but can still finish the season as high as the second seed or as low as the third seed by beating Western Yell County at home Friday night at Diamondback Stadium.
Friday the Rattler defense started the game by forcing a Dragon punt and three plays later Xeng Yang rumbled inside the Dragon 20 but the pickup was negated by a holding call and the Rattlers eventually punted.
It would be 16-0 before the Rattlers snapped the ball again.
The Dragons were in a third-and-12 on the ensuing possession when Ethan Gregory hit tight end James Vanoumy, who appeared to be covered up, for 51 yards, which led to a Malachi West 15-yard scoring run. Gregory ran for a 2-point conversion to make it 8-0.
Ethan Jones recovered an onside kick to give the Dragons the ball at the Rattler 40 and West ran 13-yards for his second touchdown and added the conversion as well to double the lead to 16-0 with 3:01 left in the first quarter.
The Rattlers, punted on their next possession to pin the Dragons, but were assessed a flagrant facemask penalty to keep the drive alive. Still Magazine would force a punt, but would rough the punter.
This time the Dragons took advantage of the extra set of downs and went on to make it 24-0 on West’s third touchdown, on a run of 3 yards, and a 2-point conversion pass from Gregory to Austin Wakefield.
West ran 13 times for 119 yards in the game for the Dragons.
Josh Canda and Luke Short combined for a sack to start Mountainbug’s next possession — Magazine had three sacks with the other two courtesy of Bryce McDowell — but the Dragons recovered and went on to go up 32-0 with 2:32 left in the half on a 9-yard run by Gregory and another Gregory to Wakefield pass.
Out of the intermission the Rattlers drove to the Dragon 20 but Caleb Hyatt was stopped at the 16 on a fourth-and-5 play.
Eleven plays later Gregory ran for his second touchdown and Jesse Quick ran for the extra two and it was 40-0.
A roughing the passer penalty helped Magazine move the chains early in the final quarter and Hyatt carried on five straight downs for 48 yards, scoring from the 5 with 7:09 to play. Kobe Faughn ran for the conversion to make it 40-8.
The Rattlers managed only 130 total yards, but Hyatt finished with 14 carries for 93 yards, going over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
