University of Central Arkansas quarterback Luke Hales earned Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week and FCS National Freshman Player of the Week honors Monday.
Hales, a 6-foot-2, 231-pound redshirt freshman from Greenwood threw for 304 yards and five touchdowns in his first game action in last Saturday's 66-35 win over Houston Baptist.
Hales also had a two-yard rushing touchdown as the No. 16/18 Bears improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in SLC play.
Hales was starting in place of sophomore Breylin Smith and junior Kirk Baugh, who both missed the game with injuries.
Hales tossed a 65-yard touchdown pass to senior Jakari Dillard on his first collegiate pass.
For the game, he completed 16 of 27 with one interception and no sacks.
The Bears finished with a season-high 558 yards of total offense in their first consecutive victory over the Huskies.
UCA travels to Nacogdoches, Texas, this weekend to take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at 2 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Orr named to Preseason All-Southland Team
University of Central Arkansas guard Kamry Orr was named to the All-Southland Conference Preseason teams, the league announced Tuesday – unveiling the two five-member teams a day in advance of the conference's 2018 Basketball Social Media Day scheduled for Wednesday in Houston at the Toyota Center, to be aired on ESPN3 at 6:00 p.m. Central.
The Southland will also release its men's and women's basketball preseason polls Wednesday.
Orr, a senior out of Little Rock Central High School, was named to the Preseason All-Southland Second Team after earning third team all-conference honors in 2017-18 following a season in which she averaged 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals for a Central Arkansas team that won 25 games and advanced to the championship game of the WBI postseason tournament.
Orr finished in the Top 10 in the Southland last season in steals and free throw percentage (75.8 percent) and was 12th in both scoring and 3-point percentage (34.2 percent).
She was also the league's Player of the Week on Jan. 15 after averaging 29.5 points in wins at Incarnate Word and Nicholls, where she scored a career-high 32.
The Sugar Bears open their season at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 against Central Baptist in the Farris Center.
Doerr claims SAA Offensive Player of the Week honor
Following his incredible performance Saturday against Birmingham-Southern College, junior quarterback Mason Doerr took home his first-ever Southern Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week award, announced by the conference office Monday.
Doerr passed for a career-best 415 yards against the Panthers including a long of 62 yards to senior wide receiver Michael Spainhour.
In addition to that, the Frisco, Texas-product competed 31 pass on 50 attempts for an even 62.0 passing percentage completion.
Doerr also recorded an outstanding 154.12 passing efficiency against BSC.
Passing was not all that Doerr did on Saturday. He also scrambled for 17 yards on four rushes.
Doerr and the rest of the Hendrix football team get back to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium with a showdown against the Berry Vikings.
Lewis named SAA Defensive Player of the Week
Following our outstanding performance this past week, the Southern Athletic Association office announced that sophomore goalie Anna Claire Lewis obtained the SAA Defensive Player of the Week honor Monday.
Lewis played more than 150 minutes in all, including leading Hendrix to a shutout victory in double overtime Friday against Sewanee, 1-0.
In all, Lewis carded 11 saves on the week.
In the match against Centre, Lewis entered the game following a red card.
After conceding a goal on the penalty kick that followed the red card, Lewis did not allow a Colonel goal for the remaining 42 minutes of action while Hendrix also played a man-down.
On the year, Lewis has landed 14 saves and two shutouts and is 3-0-0.
The Siloam Springs-native has seen action in 357:03 minutes this year and has competed in six total games.
