Cedarville’s Jose Chavez scored late for the Pirates as the squad defeated Mountainburg in the junior high contest 20-12.

Chavez scored from three yards out for the win on Thursday.

Bryce Calhoun scored on a 60-yard touchdown run for Cedarville and finished the game with 13 carries for 174 yards. Jon Stewart had a 45-yard run for another Cedarville score.

Greenwood 28, Alma 12

The Bulldogs took the first round in the nonconference game Thursday night at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

The Airedales took an early lead as Logan Hatcher hit Preston Jureka with a 25-yard pass. Alma missed the PAT. Greenwood would later score and held a 7-6 advantage all the way into fourth quarter.

Coach J.D. Coursey said Greenwood was able to “hit a couple of big plays back to back to build the lead.”

Alma scored late on a 50-yard pass to Cody Rodriguez from Hatcher.

“We had some linemen really stand out for us,” said Coursey. “Matthew Hamblin played solid on the defensive line and recorded a sack.”

Linebacker Gabe Jensen recorded nine tackles.

Alma travels to Morrilton next week before hosting Booneville in the home opener on Sept. 15.

Rogers 34, Van Buren 7

Jude Bartholomew had the sole touchdown for the Pointers as he scored from 56 yards out in the second quarter.

Van Buren begins a three-game homestand next week with Greenbrier visiting followed by Morrilton.
