Obituary - Sept. 14, 2016

Helen Irene Tankersley, 97, of Van Buren died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016. She was born Nov. 24, 1918, in Mountainburg. She was a member of First Christian Church where she was an officer on the church board as deaconist and received an outstanding service to mankind award from Eastside Seratoma Club. She was president of Christian Women’s Fellowship and received a 50-year membership ine from the Fidelity Chapter No. 86 Order of the Eastern Star. She was instrumental in developing the Fort Smith Girls Shelter, Lincoln Day Care, Interfaith Community Center, Zion Foster Home of Crawford County and children centers in Oklahoma and member of the Community Rescue Auxiliary, The Salvation Army and other volunteer organizations. She was the widow of the Melvin M. “Pete” Tankersley.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Gayle Smith of Fort Smith; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Sept. 12 at Woodlawn Mausoleum Chapel in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis-Roberts Funeral Chapel.
