Cars packed the parking lot of Mulberry’s new Walmart Neighborhood Market on Wednesday during the store’s grand opening.

About 120 showed up for the new Walmart’s ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony at 3500 Mulberry Highway 64 on Wednesday morning, said store manager Maranda Zolliecoffer.

Residents and city officials toured the store, signed up for giveaways, ate cake and took home product samples during the first day of opening.

"Everybody is super excited about the variety we are offering here," Zolliecoffer said. "I think the biggest surprise for many is how much we’ve put into this small space."

Monica Freeland, assistant to the Mulberry mayor, attended the grand opening and said the store would be an asset to the community.

"Particularly for our community, they don’t have to go as far so they’re saving money by shopping here, and it’s amazing what’s in this little store," Freeland said. "It’s not huge, but it has a nice variety. You can find your basics and a few extras."

Elizabeth Rush lives in Mulberry and said she is one of those thankful to have a store closer to home.

"I won’t have to go no further than here," Rush said. "I can even have my medicine changed to here and I won’t have to go to Alma."

Mulberry’s new Walmart offers fresh produce and meats, a fully functioning pharmacy and many other grocery store items. Site to Store service will be available for deliveries, and all the money services except the coin store will be offered.

Slightly smaller than other Neighborhood Markets, the Mulberry store is the first of its size in Arkansas and is about the size of the Walmart Express convenience stores.

Store hours will be 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays. Walmart hired 36 people to staff the new store location.
