A Van Buren man was killed Tuesday when he and a passenger were thrown from a three-wheel Volkswagen conversion motorcycle after it was hit by another vehicle.

Frankie Dean King, 63, and passenger Velma Brandon were traveling east on Arkansas 162 in Kibler at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Arkansas State Police.

King was attempting to make a right hand turn onto Mays Branch Road when the motorcycle he was driving was struck from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, said State Trooper Allen Hamilton.

According to the fatal accident preliminary report, when struck, King and his passenger were thrown from the three-wheeler before it caught on fire. Neither were wearing motorcycle helmets, Hamilton said.

King was killed in the accident. He lived less than a mile from the accident site, on Mays Branch Road.

The driver of the SUV, Shanta Feimster, told police she was talking on a hands-free device, and did not see King making his turn, Hamilton said.

Brandon was injured in the accident and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith for care. She was in the intensive care unit as of Thursday afternoon. Feimster was not injured.

The accident is still under investigation, Hamilton said.
