A Van Buren man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly setting fire to the grass at the Van Buren Public Library, 1409 Main St.
Bradley Mcelrath, 49, was booked in to the Crawford County Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree criminal mischief.
Detective Jonathan Wear said officers were dispatched to the library at 10:57 a.m. When officers arrived, there was a large amount of smoke and fire on the south side of the library.
"They observed a male subject identified as Bradley Mcelrath running around with a fire extinguisher stating that he was a firefighter," Wear said.
According to the officers, Mcelrath was acting very erratic and disorderly, Wear said.
He said witnesses on scene identified Mcelrath as the person who started the fire. According to the witnesses, Mcelrath had a lit piece of paper on fire in his hand before the grass was set on fire.
