Keep Van Buren Beautiful is one of five Arkansas organizations that have received Cigarette Litter Prevention Program grants from Keep America Beautiful.

The other organizations are Hot Springs/Garland County Beautification Commission, Keep Fayetteville Beautiful, Keep Little Rock Beautiful and Keep Ozark Beautiful. All are certified local affiliates of Keep America Beautiful.

John Pope, director of KVBB said, the CLPP program is designed to support local community improvement initiatives to reducing cigarette butt and cigar tip litter.

With financial support from the grant, these organizations will encourage enforcement of local litter laws, educate the public using public service messages and advertising, place ash receptacles where smokers must stop smoking before proceeding, and distribute pocket ashtrays or portable auto ashtrays to adult smokers, Pope said.

"We congratulate these five affiliates for being chosen to receive a CLPP grant," said Robert Phelps, director of Keep Arkansas Beautiful and state leader in Arkansas for keep America Beautiful. "Through public awareness, we can help Arkansans change their attitudes about littering and put waste where it belongs."

During 2012, communities nationwide that implemented a CLPP reduced cigarette litter by an average of 55 percent, Pope said.
