A local church is bringing an original musical first produced in Israel to the River Valley.
After touring successfully in Israel, Europe, Canada and the United States, Heritage is producing "God With Us" at the Fort Smith Convention Center, with performances Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 4 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
"It is estimated that well over 100,000 people have seen this amazing original musical in person," said Chuck King, minister of worship arts at Heritage Church.
King, along with his family, has been involved with "God With Us" "The Covenant" and "Yeshua" as a producer, creative contributor and a lead actor since its inception in 2001, he said.
"Because of my history with the show, it seems only natural that Heritage Church would be led to bring it to our area, especially after the success of our past productions," King said.
"God With Us" is an adaptation of two original musical productions by Elizabeth and Robert Muren, "The Covenant" and "Yeshua."
"The Covenant" recounts the miraculous story of the People of Israel, spanning from the calling of Abraham until the establishment of the modern State in 1948. Excerpts will follow this story from the beginning through the Old Testament stories including the Book of Esther.
"Yeshua" is the story of the last days of the Apostle Peter’s life while imprisoned in Rome in the year 64 A.D., and his quest to fulfill the promise he gave Jesus to secure his legacy. Through stories and songs, the message of the Kingdom will be remembered as it is passed down from generation to generation.
This new work combining the two musicals comes to Fort Smith before its next inception - a unique film project now in development entitled "Yeshua - Words Are Not Enough." This musical motion picture will depict the dramatic clashing of the Roman Empire and The Kingdom of Yeshua.
"Although the entertainment value is at a very high professional level, the musical itself not only gives us the opportunity to witness familiar Bible stories come to life, but it also helps us understand clearly God’s heart to rescue mankind," King said. "‘God With Us’ is simply a powerful way for us to share that story."
Guest artists include writers Robert and Elizabeth Muren from Norway, Jamie Wommack from Woodland Park, Colo., Kathryn Helton of Knoxville, Tenn., and choreographer Heather Newman from Tulsa, Okla. They will be supported by a cast of 70 singers, actors and dancers.
