A women’s football clinic will be held Aug. 8 at Blakemore Field for ladies who want to know a little more about the game.
Members of the Van Buren Football Booster Club organized the clinic for women 18 and older who may not know about football, said Laura Whitlow, club president.
"It’s for anyone who is interested in coming," Whitlow said.
A tailgate party will be held at 6:30 p.m., with the clinic beginning at 7 p.m., she said.
Women will get time on the field with coaches to learn about each position, run through plays, learn about penalty calls from officials, try on equipment and tour the field house, Whitlow said.
"It’s very informative," she said.
There is no cost for the clinic and as an added incentive, any ladies who participate will be able to join the booster club for $5, Whitlow said.
Last year the club extended services to junior football teams all the way down to third grade. Club organizers are targeting moms of the younger players in particular, Whitlow said.
"We’d really like to get our third grade, our younger moms, to come," Whitlow said. "Most of us with kids in high school have already attended."
Door prizes including tall season passes for volley ball and football and gift certificates will be given away during the clinic, Whitlow said. Pointer Pride merchandise also will be available, she said.
Women can sign up for the clinic or join the club by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, she said. The club also can be found on Facebook at Van Buren Pointer Football Booster Club.
A community prep rally is being held Aug. 23 at Blakemore Field beginning at 6:30 p.m. All teams, third grade and up, will be introduced during the rally. The rally is meant to show off Van Buren’s football programs and the work of those involved, Whitlow said.
"What’s really fun is the high school team will scrimmage with one of the junior teams," she said.
Van Buren High School’s first football game of the season and against Alma, The Battle of the Bone, will be Sept. 6 in Van Buren.
Memberships for the Van Buren Football Booster Club are $15 for a single basic, $25 for a family basic and $30 for business. Members are given a chance to participate in votes and club decisions.
Club meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at the Blakemore Field house.
