The City of Van Buren and the Western Arkansas Flying Disc Association will officially open a new disc golf course at 1 p.m. today at Dr. Louis Peer Memorial City Park.

Van Buren Mayor Bob Freeman, other city officials and representatives of WAFDA will be at the park to dedicate the Eagle’s Nest Disc Golf Course. The event will be held at Hole No. 1 near the Boys and Girls Club.

WAFDA will host a tournament after the dedication, which is open to the public.

The course is one of the park improvement projects funded by a 1 percent sales tax approved by voters in July 2012.

The tax money also is being used to build new police and fire departments, senior inn and the restoration of Lee Creek Park for recreational day use. Cass Job Corps currently is clearing and leveling the Lee Creek property which has been closed since a tornado in 1996.
