Candidate filings begin in July for both school board and city elections.

Filing for Sept. 20 school board elections begin Tuesday, July 5, at noon and end Tuesday, July 12, at noon.

All five school districts have one position up for election this year.

School board elections will be held for Position 2 in Mountainburg, currently held by Carol Pense; Position 2 in Alma, currently held by Ron Haught; Position 4 in Van Buren, currently held by Carman L. Young; Position 2 in Cedarville, currently held by Jerry Kennedy; and Position 1 in Mulberry, currently held by Robby Bruce.

Candidates must file in person at the Crawford County Clerk’s Office to complete political practice pledge and affidavit of eligibility forms.

?Early voting for school board seats is Tuesday, Sept. 13, through Monday, Sept. 19, at the Crawford County Emergency Operations Center at 1820 Chestnut Street in Van Buren. Early voting will be during the county clerk’s regular business hours.

Candidate filing for municipal seats begins July 29 during the county clerk’s regular business hours and ends Aug. 19 at noon.

All city alderman seats are up for election this year, as is Cedarville’s recorder-treasurer position.

Two other city positions - Van Buren city clerk and Alma city attorney - that normally are a part of the midterm election cycle are open this year because of resignations.

Van Buren City Clerk Barbie Curtis is retiring, and Alma City Attorney Chuck Baker tendered his resignation to take up the seat of Crawford County district judge on Jan. 1.

Both school board and non-partisan so candidates must submit signed petitions to be considered for the ballot.
