Center for Art and Education in Van Buren has a full schedule of events lined up for the coming weeks, including a special art exhibition and the unveiling of its newest acquisition.

Van Buren High School Career Center students are providing artwork for a special exhibition Thursday. The exhibit will be 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the Career Center at Izard Campus, 501 N. 24th St.

Acrylic, ink and airbrush art created by students under the direction of Norris Chee will be on display. The works are a result of two weeks students spent learning from Chee about the Navajo language and the Code Talkers during World War II.

Chee is a native Dineh, or Navajo, from Mexican Hat, Utah, who has worked as an artist in residence and been a part of multicultural education since 1993.

Six weeks of art-based curriculum was provided by CAE to the Career Center students through an Arkansas Arts Council Art In Education In School Residency Grant.

CAE, 104 N. 13th St., will have its annual holiday market and unframed art sale Dec. 5-19. This year’s market will last longer and have extended hours to accommodate shoppers.

Visitors to the market can purchase original works of art from local and regional artists at discounted prices, including handmade jewelry. At least 16 artists will be participating in the market.

Regular CAE hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Extended hours are Dec. 8, 11, 15 and 18, open 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

CAE will host a reception 4 p.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 to unveil "Patience" by Timothy J. Clark, the newest piece of art work acquired for the gallery’s permanent collection.

"Patience" will be dedicated in honor of Nadine Hardin Miller for her dedication to the center, its programs and its mission.

Clark is a master artist who’s watercolor and oil paintings are represented in permanent museum collections including the Smithsonian-National Portrait Gallery in Washington, The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio and Maine’s Farnsworth Art Museum.

Clark will speak during the reception and participate in a meet and greet.
