Employees of the Van Buren School District will be receiving bonus checks this month.

Members of the Van Buren School Board voted to give certified personnel $600 bonuses and classified personnel $400 bonuses.

Superintendent Dr. Harold Jeffcoat suggested the bonuses at a May 26 special called board meeting.

Voting for the bonuses were board members Christy Mayo, Jamie Hammond, Kevin Bell, J.R. McPhate and Theresa Bell. Carmen Young and Candice Settle-Beshears were absent.

The vote came after Jeffcoat pointed the district will end the 2015-16 school year with a surplus of about $5.2 million.

"It is good to be where we are right now," Jeffcoat said. "A lot of hard work and some tough decisions to reduce spending and be efficient had to be made. It is a testament to those who work for the Van Buren School District."
