A teapot race will be part of the Old Timers Day Steampunk Festival to be held in downtown Van Buren on May 18-19.

Center for Art and Education will host the Splendid Teapot Race at 4 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of historic Main Street in front of the future home of the CAE next door to the King Opera House.

“Teapots on remote controlled cars will run their way through a steampunk inspired obstacle course,” said Jane Owen, CAE director. “Bribes will be accepted. There is only a $10 entry fee.”

The contestants will maneuver their teapots along the race course and through a variety of obstacles.

The vehicles will negotiate the course one at a time and will have a time limit of two minutes to get through the course. Points will be deducted from a contestant’s total for every 10 seconds over the allotted time.

Contestants who do not complete the course within a specified time of three minutes will be disqualified.

Prizes will be given in both children and adult categories for most entertaining attempt at the course, fastest completion of the course, best decorated vehicle and best steampunk dressed contestant.

All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Center for Art and Education in support of their children’s art education and summer camp programs.

Contestants can register ahead of time by calling (479) 474-7767 or by visiting Art-ed.org.
