Prom season is fast approaching for high schools in the River Valley and many girls are shopping for their perfect gown to wear to the event.
Finding the perfect dress can be an exciting experience for a young lady but at the same time it can also be a stressful one for those who might not be able to afford a gown.
A Van Buren nonprofit is hoping to ease this stress by providing free prom dresses to teenage girls in the River Valley who could not afford them otherwise.
The annual Once Upon a Prom Dress Giveaway will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Heritage United Methodist Church in Van Buren.
The dress giveaway is open to girls age 14-19 who will be attending formal events this spring. “Approximately 500 dresses ranging from size 00-24 will be available Saturday,” said Kimberly Tursky, event organizer.
Each girl may receive one dress and must be present to get a dress. Moms or other family members may not pick out a dress for a girl if she is not present.
“No proof of financial need is required to receive a dress, however we do ask that you truly be in need,” Tursky said.
According to Tursky, Once Upon a Prom gets its dresses from donations. Most donations come from girls who went to prom and do not need their dresses any longer.
During the 2018 event a total of 135 dresses were given away.
