Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Crawford County, Inc. is looking for cookers to participate in their second annual Dutch Oven Lid Lifting fundraiser. The event will be held April 13th in downtown Van Buren.

Cooks from all over the state of Arkansas will be competing for the best Dutch oven dish.

According to Celeste Lewis, Executive Director of CASA-Van Buren, “It is a lot of fun.”

Celeste prepared two dishes for last year’s event.  "I had no idea about dutch oven cooking but I found out if you can cook your dish in an oven, you can cook it in a dutch oven.”

CASA will provide dutch ovens ff you don’t have your own. They will also be providing the charcoal.

All the lids on the dishes will be “lifted” at the same time when the bell is rung at noon. Judges will sample dishes and present awards in the following categories: Main dish; side dish; soup/chili; dessert; and people’s choice.

Cooks who want to participate or businesses who would like to sponsor a table or cook  should call Donna Young, the event coordinator, at 474-4300 or CASA at 474-8502.

The public can purchase a $10 ticket to sample and vote on their favorite dishes.

“Come join the fun, have some great food, vote for your favorites and support CASA at the same time,” said Lewis.

The mission of CASA is to recruit, train and support volunteer advocates who will serve to ensure safe permanent homes for abused and neglected children in the community.
