The Van Buren Veterans of Foreign Wars Post will host a flag retirement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Robert Jack VFW Post 1322, 23 N. 20th St., has requested flags be presented for proper and respectful disposal.
For those who cannot make the ceremony, a flag drop box is placed at the Van Buren Municipal Complex, 1003 Broadway St., in Van Buren. Flags can also be dropped off at the VFW Post or with local VFW Post 1322 Quartermaster CFO/CIO Matthew Hicks, by calling (479) 650- 6551 to arrange a drop-off or pick up.
“Once a flag becomes faded, torn, or ripped up, it is then no longer fit for duty and needs to be retired properly and with respect,” Hicks said. “Although there is no specific protocol in the U.S. Flag Code to disposing of a flag, it does say, ‘The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.’”
