The Alma High School cheerleaders will wrap up their season as basketball concludes in the following weeks.

However, the squad achieved a goal they didn’t even consider last year: Winning a national championship.

Alma won the 2018 Game Day Varsity National title among squads of similar size at Walt Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 11.

“I think it was our attention to minor details,” said coach Christy Law, who has been with Alma for five years. “We were so together and so perfect… it made us look more precise.”

When the squad assembled at the start of their season, it had goals like any other athletic team. The cheerleaders knew they wanted to win state and go compete on the national level. However, they didn’t suspect winning a national title was within their grasp.

“We have done this routine hundreds of times,” Law said. “We broke it down at times and worked on little sections. These girls have been working towards this since last March. It took a lot of sacrifice to accomplish this.”

The team is comprised of most seniors, five who made the trip last year to the national event. Law said they play an integral role in helping the rest of the team calm their nerves for the national stage.

“This bunch was the most determined group of girls I’ve worked with and they wanted this,” said Law. “I’ve been working with this bunch of seniors since they were eighth graders. To watch them grow up has been amazing.”
