An event to support a local dog rescue that will include pet photo and costume contests is set for Saturday at the Alma Farmers’ Market.

Dog Days, an event with three pet-centered contests, is an effort by Alma Farmers’ Market to raise awareness and money for the Almost Home Shelter and Rescue.

There are multiple ways to take part in the event, including entering a pet in one or all three of the pet contests.

A “cutest pet” photo contest can be entered by simply posting a pet photo on the Alma Farmers’ Market Facebook page. The top 15 photos with the highest number of likes will be printed and put on display the day of the event.

Votes on the photos can be made with cash, and the photo that raises the most money will be named the winner. All proceeds from the votes will be donated on that day to the Almost Home Shelter.

Two contests will be held the day of the event, for best pet costume contest and cutest pet. The best costume contest is set for 10 a.m., and the cutest pet contest is set for 11 a.m.

Both contests will be held beside the red caboose at 533 Fayetteville Ave. Entry deadline for best costume is 9:45 a.m. the day of the event, and entry deadline for cutest pet is 10:45 a.m.

Another way to show support for Almost Home is to drop off a donation of soft dog food or paper towels on the day of the Dog Days event, donate money or volunteer time, or foster or adopt an animal from the shelter.

Almost Home Shelter partnered with the city of Van Buren to turn the city dog pound into an all volunteer shelter in March.

Dogs are placed in the shelter by animal control. If an owner does not claim the dog within five days, it is then available for adoption.

Adoption fees are $50 unless the shelter is promoting a special. Dogs are spayed or neutered and vaccinated before adoption.

Registration forms for pet contests and other details about the event can be found at Alma Farmers’ Market is open Tuesdays 3-7 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon.
