A health fair meant to help parents and kids preparing for the upcoming school year is set for Saturday at the First Assembly of God Church in Van Buren.

Health screenings, immunizations, grocery and school supply giveaways, and information about area civic organizations will be offered at the fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All services will be free.

Britt Brooks, lead pastor at First Assembly, started the health fair for the first time last year as a way for First Assembly to be an outreach center to the community, he said.

Provided during the event will be eye, ear, dental and physical exams from local physicians, and free hair cuts.

Back-to-school immunizations will be provided by Hamby and Hamby Family Medical Clinic. Students moving to the area from out of state will need to bring their shot records.

Van Buren Police Department will take children’s fingerprints to enter into the national database, and Van Buren firefighters will demonstrate how to escape a burning building.

Crawford County Sheriff’s Department mounted patrol and Southwest EMS will be on hand.

Representatives from the Van Buren Public Library and the Boys and Girls Club of Van Buren will provide information on their services.

Food and drinks and activities for kids, including face painting and bounce-arounds, also will be available during the event. Local restaurants also will give out coupons and samples.

Also during the event, the church will give away school supplies and groceries.

Parking for the event will be at the church, limited space at Legacy Heights and Parkview Elementary School.
