Additional produce vendors are wanted for the Alma Farmers Market with opening day on Saturday, May 6, at 8 a.m.
Space is available for all vendors who fit the criteria laid out in the state vendor’s guidelines, which can be found on the Alma market’s newly created website, Almafarmersmarket.com, but organizer Marilyn Sneed said the market is especially in need of produce vendors.
“We’re hoping to bring fresh, locally grown produce to the people of Alma, hoping to connect people to their food source and hoping to create a social hub,” Sneed said.
Most desired are vendors selling fruits and vegetables, honey, and eggs, Sneed said.
Vendor space is free, but vendors must go through the application process, Sneed said. One craft vendor will be accepted for every two produce vendors, she said.
Market hours will be Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. for produce only, and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon for all vendors.
Alma is working to revitalize its farmers market, which has seen little growth in recent years. Sneed, a nutrition health coach with Coleman Pharmacy of Alma, heads the Alma Area Chamber of Commerce farmers market committee.
A farmers market also contributes to the local economy, provides healthier food choices for residents and, since items are sourced locally, has a lesser impact on natural resources, Sneed said.
Sneed has personally wanted a functioning farmers market since moving to the area, she said.
“There are so many things about a farmers market that appeal to me,” Sneed said. “I like to buy things that are handmade. I like to meet the person that made it. It’s really cool to meet the person who made the jelly you’re about to serve to your family. I like to support people who are industrious and create their own business.”
Alma Advertising and Promotion Commission also provided the Alma chamber with money for new signs that will reflect the market hours.
Alma’s market has also received a promotions grant from the Arkansas Agriculture Department and Farm Credit, Sneed said.
Applications and additional information can be found on the website or by contacting the Alma chamber at (479) 632-4127.
