A bass tournament to benefit a Van Buren police officer who is battling cancer will be from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Fort Smith Park.
“This tournament is to help Officer Mike Stewart with medical, travel and other expenses as he continues to fight cancer,” said Chuck Green, a fellow VBPD officer and organizer of the tournament. “One-hundred percent of all donations and proceeds will go to Mike.”
First-place finisher in the benefit bass tournament will be guaranteed $1,000, second place $500 and third place $250. Big bass will pay $500.
“This is a two-person team format trailer tournament based out of Fort Smith Park (Sixth Street boat ramp) spanning along the Arkansas River from Kerr Reservoir to Lake Dardanelle,” Green said.
Tournament entry fee is $100 per team.
Teams will be able to check in and conduct livewell checks at one of three locations: Applegate Cove Park, Fort Smith Park or Shoal Bay State Park.
Take off will be at safelight, Green said.
Weigh-in will be conducted at Fort Smith Park. All fish must measure 14 inches or more. Only largemouth bass, spotted bass and smallmouth bass will count toward a five bass limit per team. Check in for weigh-in will be at 3 p.m. and verified by photo ID prior to weighing in fish.
A barbecue lunch and drink will be provided to paid contestants at the conclusion of the tournament.
Pre-registration is available at Joe’s Alma Service Center and the Van Buren Police Department. Entry forms and official rules can also be picked up at several locations in the Fort Smith area.
The tournament will be sponsored by A to Z stores, Phoenix Avenue Tire, Exit Bail Bonds, Brico Plumbing, Barling Boat Sales, Whit’s Marine, Make A Wake Boat Sales, Copher’s Boat Center, JC’s BBQ, LockStar Hair Studios, WWL, Shelter Insurance - Agent Jeff Clark and Van Buren Fraternal Order of Police
