Jerry Austin Martin has announced his candidacy for Alma City Council Ward 1 Position 1.

Martin has worked for country music station KTCS in Fort Smith for more than 15 years, he said.

“I have a thorough understanding of the structure and operation of city government and with my 20-plus years in broadcasting I know the importance of relationships and service,” Martin said. “Whether it’s working with and coaching youth and young adults or raising funds for Make-A-Wish (Foundation), working with Ronald McDonald (House) Charities or just helping with church activities, my passion has always been in serving.”

Martin’s wife Donna (Jernigan) Martin has been an Airedale for most of her life and raised three sons that graduated from Alma High School - with two still living and raising families in Alma, Martin said.

Martin is passionate about serving the residents of Alma, and making sure that Alma is a vibrant city where businesses can prosper and a safe place for people to raise their families, he said.

“I recently stood and was the voice for a group of home owners who were battling a rezoning issue that would potentially cost them thousands of dollars. There was nothing in the proposal that was in the best interest of the homeowners or in the best interest of Alma, (and) the rezoning issue was defeated,” Martin said. “I want to continue in that spirit and serve the residents of Alma and I feel I can be a positive voice.”

Martin noted Alma’s future potential growth along with $12 million in current projects that need to be completed, and said he will bring a “common-sense straight-forward approach to dealing with these issues.”

If elected to the Alma City Council, Martin said he will be an asset to the city and serve the best interest of its residents.

“There are some great things in the future for this area and for Alma,” Martin said. “We will truly be the crossroads of America and that’s exciting.”
