Gary Perry announced his candidacy for a seat on the Alma City Council.

Perry is running for the Ward 3 Position 2, currently held by Alderman Rinda Baker, who is running for Alma city attorney.

Perry served more than 30 years as an Alma city councilman, until January 2015. He is the founding pastor of Visionary Christian Church, a non-denominational church in downtown Alma.

“I am extremely familiar with the structure, operation and importance of a productive city government,” Perry said. I have the passion, professionalism and education to be an effective member of the Alma City Council.”

Perry graduated from Alma High in 1970, and went on to obtain his bachelor of science degree in business admnistration from the College of the Ozarks in 1974.

He serves on the Boys and Girls Club of the Alma Area Board of Directors, University of the Ozarks Alumni Association Board of Directors and Sparks Medical Center of Van Buren Board of Trustees, and is a member of the River Valley Ministerial Fellowship and Alma Rotary Club.

Perry has been employed by Combined Insurance Company of America for more than 15 years. He was a territory manager for more than seven years and now works as an active agent, he said.

His wife, Karen, is a registered nurse and has worked for Sparks Health System for more than 30 years, Perry said. Their sons, Shon and Ethan, graduated from Alma High School in 1992 and 1999, respectively, he said.

“I have a strong desire to continue serving the citizens of Alma, and help oversee the progress of the $12 million in projects Alma voters approved in the 2014 sales and use tax proposal,” Perry said.
