Teens at the Boys and Girls Club of Van Buren are enjoying a completely renovated game room and lounge area thanks to the generosity of Walmart.

The club was awarded a grant totaling $2,500 through the Walmart Van Buren store to purchase new furniture, décor and other items to overhaul the space within the club.

Van Buren Walmart Store Manager Jeff Mathis visited the club Wednesday to see the room and visit with teen members.

“We are very proud of our new teen room and to have the opportunity to show local Walmart leaders the result of their generosity,” said Cindy Faldon, BGCVB executive director. “One of our goals both here as a local club and for our national organization is to increase overall teen membership, and provide them with a safe, supportive environment after school and throughout the year. Giving teens their own unique space within the club, suited to their needs and tastes, is an essential part of that process.”

The room officially opened for teens to use with the start of school in mid-August.

“We have received wonderfully positive feedback from the teens about the room and we are hoping that word will spread throughout the community, helping to increase our overall teen attendance,” Faldon said.

Funds from Walmart were used to purchase new furnishings, gaming system with games, phone charging stations and board games.

“We are so grateful to Walmart for funding the renovation of our teen room,” Faldon said. “Walmart has been a long-time supporter of our organization and we appreciate their continued commitment to helping us serve the youth of our community.”

In operation since 1958, the Boys and Girls Club of Van Buren’s mission is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.”

BGCVB serves local youth through its after school, summer, and sports programs, averaging more than 220 students on a daily basis. The club provides nutritious meals and snacks each day, and offers a number of self-esteem and academic programs designed to build confidence and instill values in its members. The Boys and Girls Club of Van Buren is a United Way community partner.
