The Van Buren Lions Club will host the award presentation for the area consumer of the year at noon Wednesday at Western Sizzlin’.

Receiving the award will be Marissa Hernandez of Van Buren, a registered nurse with Valley Behavioral Health in Barling.

The award is sponsored by the Division of Services for the Blind of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

Hernandez is one of only 13 people in Arkansas who will receive an area award and was selected from an area that includes Sebastian, Montgomery, Scott, Logan, Johnson, Yell, Crawford, and Franklin counties. Her employer will be recognized as an outstanding business partner for its commitment to promoting the employment of persons with vision impairment.

DSB Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Tina Shores will explain the area COY award and present it to Hernandez, who will be given the opportunity to say some words of acceptance and maybe tell her story. Then Shores will recognize and thank the employer, Valley Behavioral Health.

This is the eighth year that DSB has given consumer of the year awards to recognize individuals who have managed their rehabilitation plans, gained marketable skills, secured good jobs, and become role models for others. An overall state winner will be selected at the end of the year.
