Police have identified a man fatally shot in Sequoyah County as being from Van Buren.

Clinton McCormick, 29, of Van Buren was killed Saturday night after being shot by a 95-year-old man who claimed he was protecting himself, according to police.

McCormick was shot outside the elderly man’s residence on Central High Road between Muldrow and Sallisaw. Police did not provide the identity of the shooter, whose caretaker is McCormick’s mother.

Sherriff’s deputies were called to the scene at about 6:21 p.m. Saturday, where they found McCormick dead in the front yard.

Police said the elderly man has had problems with his caretaker’s son and told him not to come onto his property.

The man told authorities that McCormick had called and threatened him, and then the 29-year-old traveled to his residence and continued to threaten him.

The elderly man told police he felt threatened and fired one shot intending to injure McCormick.

McCormick’s mother was at the residence when the shooting occurred and both she and the homeowner were interviewed by investigators, police said.

The elderly man was not taken into custody. The case will be sent to the district attorney’s office, police said.
