Hailey Ostrander had 26 digs Thursday and the Alma Airedalettes, which were winless after five matches, are now closing in on the .500 mark.
Ostrander’s big effort helped Alma sweep Vilonia, 25-12, 25-20, 25-21, for its fourth consecutive victory. The Airedalettes take a 3-0 5A-West record to Shiloh Christian on Tuesday.
"It shows us that, just because we lost six seniors, everybody’s stepping up and doing their part," Ostrander said. "We never got down, just because we got on a bad streak; we just battled."
Ostrander, a junior, was moved to libero after the Airedalettes lost Chanlee Terhune to an injury. She’s gone above and beyond, coach Tiffaney Drinkwitz said.
"She played outside hitter for us last year and Chanlee tore her ACL, so I moved Hailey to libero and she’s just taken it and ran with it," Drinkwitz said. "She’s gone above and beyond our expectations."
Drinkwitz said Ostrander’s softball abilities help contribute to her defensive play in volleyball.
"She plays softball and she’s definitely an athlete," Drinkwitz said. "But I never imagined it would work out so well, but she fell in love with it and we fell in love with it."
Alma jumped on Vilonia quickly Thursday, building a 15-4 lead before the Lady Eagles knew what hit them.
But Vilonia (1-2 5A-West) fought back to within six at 16-10 before Alma took control. The Airedalettes led by just two in the second game before again going on a run. Taylor Short’s ace and one of Aubrey Bailey’s 10 kills helped put the game away.
Bailey also had six blocks, and Alexys Criswell, who was key in a third game comeback, had nine kills. Shaylee Sevenstar and Robin Stewart had 15 and six assists.
"We’ve been playing well and really, we’re just not letting the ball hit the floor," Drinkwitz said. "That’s been a big key for us."
