Begic nabs fifth consecutive weekly honor

LITTLE ROCK — On the heels of a record week, junior Edina Begic was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth consecutive time.

For the week, UALR (13-4, 5-0 SBC) improved its winning streak to 11 matches after beating rival Arkansas State in four sets on Wednesday, winning at ULM Friday in straight sets and defeating Troy in five sets on Monday. UALR has won its last eight SBC matches that have gone five sets.

Begic turned in what could be the best match in UALR history when the Trojans beat Arkansas State on Wednesday (Oct. 2). Begic tallied 36 kills on only 60 swings and five errors (.517 hitting percentage), the most kills in a single match in UALR history. It is also the most kills in a four set match during the rally scoring era (since 2001) in SBC history. Begic had 16 kills in the fourth set alone to help the Trojans close out its rivals. She completed the double-double with 14 digs in the match.

Against ULM (Oct. 4), Begic had 14 kills, including seven kills on nine swings with no errors in the third set alone. Begic finished off the week leading the Trojans with a match-best 22 kills and 21 digs to help UALR win a five set match at Troy (Oct. 7). She again finished the match strong with eight kills and only one error in 13 attempts in the fifth set. In the final set of the three matches this week, Begic had 31 kills and only four errors on 46 attempts (.587).

Dating back to last year, Begic has double-digit kills in 23-straight matches and has 11 double-doubles on the season.

Bozzo, Evans power UAM in non-conference win

ITTA BENA, Miss. – Senior Tori Bozzo had a double-double of 20 kils and 14 digs and junior Tasha Evans had 12 kills and six blocks to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team to a 3-1 win over NCAADivision I Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday night. Final game scores were 25-20, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-21.

Bozzo collected her second straight 20-kill performance of the season in the win over MVSU (7-15). She had 20 kills and just four errors on 41 swings, while adding 14 digs for her third straight double-double and fifth overall this season.

Evans had 12 kills on 24 attempts with only three errors, while also adding one block solo and five block assists in the win. Junior Gabriella Jandotti led the Blossoms with seven total blocks (three solo and four assists).

Jandotti, the reigning GAC Defensive Player of the Week, added eight kills in the win.

Junior Jessica Cuba led the UAM (10-10) back row with 15 digs, while adding six kills and two block assists.

The Blossoms have the rest of the week off and return to action next Oct. 15 at home against Henderson State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Lady Bisons win at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA — The Harding volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches on Tuesday as they defeated Henderson State 3-0 in Great American Conference action.

The Lady Bisons improved to 15-5 overall and 6-0 in the GAC.

Harding also extended their conference winning streak to 23 matches; dating back to the 2011 season.

The Lady Bisons completed the season sweep over Henderson State. HU defeated HSU 3-0 earlier this season in Searcy. Harding has won the last eight meetings between the two teams.

Harding was led by senior middle blocker Alyssa Short who had 11 kills. Mollie Arnold finished with 10 kills. It was the 18th time this season Arnold has had 10 or more kills in a match. Junior setter Taryn Eubank, reigning GAC setter of the week, had 34 assists, 10 digs and four aces.

Henderson State (1-13, 0-6 GAC) was led by Sarah Williams who had eight kills. HSU had 10 blocks in the match.

The Lady Bisons will be back in action this weekend as they take part in the Missouri Southern Tournament in Joplin. On Friday, HU will face Southwest Baptist at noon, and then face Emporia State at 4 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Lady Bisons will take on Northwest Missouri State at 11 a.m., and then close out the tournament against No. 4 Central Missouri at 1 p.m.
