Tripp earns conference honor
FORT SMITH — UAFS freshman Emily Tripp has been named Heartland Conference Libero of the Week for her performance during the volleyball team’s three matches this past week.
Tripp, who is from Shawnee, Kan., averaged seven digs per set in helping lead the Lady Lions to a 3-0 record with a nonconference sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State and conference sweeps of McMurry and St. Edward’s.
She also had seven assists and one ace during the three matches.
UAFS improved to 10-6 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The Lady Lions lead the conference by two matches over provisional NCAA Division II member Lubbock Christian (8-7, 5-2) and St. Mary’s (7-8, 4-2).
The Lady Lions will resume conference play at 7 p.m. on Thursday when they travel to St. Mary’s and will complete the road trip at noon on Saturday with a match at Texas A&M International.
Suns take two at tri-match
RUSSELLVILLE — Sophomore Kaci Jackson led the Golden Suns offensively with a total of 21 kills, while freshman Shannon Helm led the team defensively with a total of nine blocks as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (12-5) swept both Central Baptist (3-16) and Lyon College (9-12) 3-0 tonight at Tucker Coliseum.
The Golden Suns won the opener over the Lady Mustang’s 25-13, 25-10, 25-10.
Sophomore Katie Huff had eight kills and four blocks. Junior Sierra Nighswonger led the Golden Suns with 15 digs against the Lady Mustang’s, adding 26 assists.
Freshman Morgan Hatwig added five kills, five digs, and two blocks. Sophomore Rachel Hampton also contributed five kills.
In the nightcap the Golden Suns took set one 25-18. During set two, Arkansas Tech went on an 11-0 run to take set two 25-7. To finish off the game the Golden Suns went on a 10-0 run to defeat the Scots 25-11.
Jackson led with nine kills, Hatwig and junior Emily Todd both tallied eight kills, while Helm added seven blocks to the match. Todd and sophomore Morgan McKellar added 11 digs, respectively. Senior Amber Cerrillos dished out 15 assists.
The Golden Suns will face Central Missouri at 2 p.m. Friday at the Missouri Southern State University Invitational in Joplin, Mo.
UALR extends win streak
TROY, Ala. — UALR (13-4, 5-0 Sun Belt Conference) ran its winning streak to 11 overall and eight in SBC matches that go to the fifth set thanks to a 25-22, 24-26, 25-21, 18-25, 15-9 win at Troy (7-12, 2-3 SBC) Monday morning (Oct. 7).
Individually, three different UALR players contributed double-doubles in the victory. Junior Edina Begichad 22 kills and a team-best 21 digs while sophomore Sonja Milanovic added 22 kills and 13 digs. Junior Marleen de Zoete added her first double-dip of the season with 50 assists and 10 digs. She also had six kills on 13 attempts with no errors for a match-best .462 hitting percentage.
Junior Capri Rino added 14 digs and an assist while redshirt freshman Carolee Dillard recorded seven blocks.UALR returns to action this weekend when it makes its lone trip to the Lone Star State. UALR battles UT Arlington Friday at 7 p.m. before closing out the weekend at Texas State Sunday at 1 p.m.
