Golden Suns fall to Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. — Despite a 12-kill effort from senior Stephanie Channell and a 47-assist, two-block, and three service aces performance from senior Amber Cerrillos, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (14-9, 4-3 GAC) fell 3-1 against the Southern Nazarene Savage Storm (16-6, 6-0 GAC) Friday afternoon in Bethany, Okla., 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17

The Golden Suns fell in set one 25-21. In set two, Southern Nazarene went on a 6-0 run against Arkansas Tech in the beginning of the set only to have the Golden Suns go on an 8-0 rally narrowing the score 12-18. After a hard fought second set, the Golden Suns lost 25-19.

In set three, after the first two plays, the Golden Suns would never let go of the lead and took the set 25-23. In the final set, the Savage Storm took the match with a 25-17 win.

Junior Emily Todd had 11 kills, while sophomore Katie Huff and senior Sara Motsinger had eight kills each. Freshman Morgan Hatwig added six kills and freshman Shannon Helm added four.

Sophomore Morgan McKellar had a game-high 22 digs. Motsinger and Huff each added two blocks, respectively.

Arkansas Tech will play at Tucker Coliseum on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. for a match against Southern Arkansas for camo night.

De Zoete breaks UALR career assist record in loss

LITTLE ROCK — Junior setter Marleen de Zoete broke the Trojans school record for assists in the first set, but UALR (15-5, 7-1) lost to Western Kentucky (17-5, 7-1 Sun Belt) 28-26, 25-20, 25-21 Friday night at the Jack Stephens Center.

With UALR trailing 22-21 in the first set, de Zoete’s set found classmate Edina Begic to knot a tight first frame. Her 11th assist of the set put her ahead of former Trojan Iva Adzic (2,924 assists, 2002-2005).

UALR was led by sophomore Sonja Milanovic’s 12 kills while Begic added 11 and a team best seven digs. Sophomore Adisa Hodzic had seven kills and only one error on 13 swings (.462 hitting percentage) while de Zoete finished the match with 34 assists.

UALR returns to action Sunday when it hosts Louisiana at noon. The Ragin’ Cajuns improved to 14-8 and 4-4 in conference action thanks to a 3-2 win over Georgia State Friday night.

Blossoms fall to ECU in road match

ADA, Okla. — The East Central University Lady Tigers defeated the University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team in three sets on Friday night in Great American Conference action inside the Kerr Center. Final game scores were 25-15, 25-21 and 25-17.

As a team, UAM (11-11, 2-5 GAC) hit .065 with 21 kills on 92 attempts with 15 errors. ECU (7-13, 4-2 GAC) hit .267 with 46 kills and 15 errors on 116 attempts.

Senior Holly Schweigert led the Blossoms offensively for the second straight match with six kills and three errors on 16 attempts a .188 percentage. Senior Tori Bozzo added five kills and freshman Kedra Johnson had four.

The Blossoms are back on the floor on Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla., First serve is set for 2 p.m.

A-State sweeps ULM

JONESBORO — The Arkansas State volleyball squad swept conference foe ULM by a score of 3-0 Friday night at the Convocation Center to earn its sixth Sun Belt Conference victory of the season, 25-23, 25-16, 30-28.

Sadie Clark and Sarah Kemp both registered double-digit kills for the Red Wolves with 12 and 11, respectively. Mallory Warrington dished out 41 assists while Megan Baska added four service aces. Defensively, Baska led A-State with 23 digs while Kemp and Kelsey Reis added two blocks each.

The Red Wolves return to the court Saturday when they battle Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
