A-State in second at ORU Shootout
TULSA — The Arkansas State women’s golf team shot a combined 610 on Monday at the ORU Shootout, finishing the tournament’s opening two rounds at the Meadowbrook Country Club in second place among 18 teams.
The Red Wolves were led by Abi Laker, who shot a 149 (74-75) to place her tied for second and leave the sophomore standout only one stroke behind leader Sofie Kuarnstrom of UALR. A-State turned in an opening-round 301 and followed with a 309 for the second 18 holes, good enough to leave it with a one-stroke lead over third-place Oral Roberts.
Megan Garland and Courtney Manning joined Laker among the top-25 leaders for ASU, ending the day tied for seventh and 25th place, respectively. Garland, just three strokes behind the leader, recorded a 151 (74-77) and Manning finished the first 36 holes with a 154 (75-79). Also competing for A-State, Marie Couffignal is tied for 32nd place with a 156 (78-78) and Arrington tied for 86th with a 173 (84-89).
The tournament’s third and final round will be played Tuesday.
Kvarnstrom leads ORU Shootout
TULSA — Junior Sofie Kvarnstrom fired matching rounds of three-over 74 at Meadowbrook CC to build a one-stroke lead going into Tuesday’s final round at the ORU Shootout, presented by Bob Hurley Auto Family.
UALR is alone in fourth place after combining for a team score of 616 (308-308) through two rounds.
Lamar leads the pack of 18 teams with a two-round total of 599, 11 shots in front of second-place Arkansas State. Host Oral Roberts (611) is in third place and five shots up on the Trojans.
Sophomore Stina Resen is in a tie for 15th place after matching rounds of five-over 76 put her at 10-over 152 for the tournament. Junior Sofia Berglund followed up a seven-over 78 with an eight-over 79 and sits at 15-over 157. Freshman Melodie Jean Dit Berthelot is at 17-over 159 heading into the final round.
Tuesday’s final round begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Trojans second, Zimmerman ties for lead at HBU invitational
MONTGOMERY,Texas — The UALR men’s golf team is in second place and just four strokes back of the lead following the first two rounds at the HBU Husky Invitational at Wood Forest Golf Club on Monday. Senior Nick Zimmerman is tied for the lead among 73 individuals at six-under par 136 through two rounds.
ULM leads the field of 13 at 13-under 555 through two rounds of competition. UALR combined for a team score of nine-under 559 to sit alone in second place. Host Houston Baptist is in third at five-under 563.
Zimmerman began the day with a two-under 69, then followed that up with a four-under 67 in his second round of 18. Sophomore Matias Calderon is two strokes back of the lead and tied for sixth at three-under 139.
Tuesday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Hendrix opens with win
TUNICA, Miss. - The Hendrix College women’s golf team opened the 2013-14 season at the Rhodes Collegiate Classic at the Links at Cottonwoods on Sunday and Monday.
The Warriors, under first year head coach Jay Lester, only had three competitors for the tournament. Junior Kelsi McClure finished 22nd overall with a 110-96—206. McClure, from Huntsville, Ark., recorded two birdies in the final round Monday.
Hendrix will compete at the Louisiana College Fall Tournament in Alexandria, La. on Oct. 15-16.
