Williamson fires 2-under in Round 3
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Harding sophomore Alex Williamson’s 2-under par 70 in the third round was the highlight of the San Antonio Shootout for the Bison men’s golf team.
It was tied for Williamson’s best round of the season and was his third round of par or better during the 2013-14 campaign.
Williamson, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., was Harding’s top finisher. He placed 37th in the 54-hole event with a score of 232.
Harding’s team placed 14th of the 15 teams with a three-round score of 939. St. Edward’s won the tournament at 895, two strokes better than second-place Lee University of Tennessee.
Harding’s next action is Mar. 3-4 at the Texoma Chevy Dealers Crawford/Wade Intercollegiate hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce.
UALR places fourth at Jim West Challenge
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — The UALR women’s golf team opened the 2014 spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Jim West Challenge at The Bandit Golf Club on Tuesday. Junior Sofie Kvarnstrom placed sixth to lead the Trojans following a 1-over par 72 in Tuesday’s final round.
Gonzaga took the top spot in the 15-team field with a combined score of 26-over 878. UALR finished the tournament with a combined score of 917, two shots ahead of fifth-place Cal State Fullerton (919).
Kvarnstrom finished at 10-over 223 for the tournament and moved up three places over the final 18 holes.
UALR will be back in action at the USA Women’s Golf Invitational at Azalea Golf Club in Mobile, Ala., beginning Feb. 24.
Golden Suns sweep Warriors
CONWAY — The Hendrix College women’s tennis team lost 9-0 to NCAA Division II foe Arkansas Tech University at the Hendrix Indoor Tennis Center on Tuesday night.
The visiting Golden Suns (4-1) swept through doubles, with Tamara Bell and Nozomi Matsuoka defeating the Warrior’s (2-2) number one tandem of freshmen Pratheepa Ravikumar and Lauren Mahaney. Hendrix junior Hannah Smashey and sophomore Madison Schallhorn lost 8-1 to Bohdana Sardak and Olga Leyshyna in the second flight.
In number three singles, Smashey fell to Leyshyna 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Kaci Dickey lost 6-0, 6-2 to Camila Roca in number four singles and senior Saranya Prathibha fell to Allison Grahl 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth spot. ATU’s Laura Sanchez topped sophomore Brenda Quintero 6-1, 6-0.
Hendrix will return to the courts on Friday when they host Austin College on the outdoor courts at 3 p.m.
Trio earns All-SAA honors
CONWAY — Three swimmers from Hendrix College were selected to the All-Southern Athletic Association Teams on Tuesday for their performances at last weekend’s SAA Championships.
Senior Jo Claire Robertson was named to the Second Team by placing second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 59.25. The Shreveport, La. native wrapped up her career as the holder of six individual school records and five relay marks.
Senior John Byford of Oklahoma City was a Third Team selection by breaking his own school record in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:13.39. Byford finishes his career as the school record holder in the 400 IM and the 200 yard freestyle.
Sophomore Bayley Krell of Denver, Colo. was also placed on the Third Team with a third place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:07.92.
