The Airedales scored on their first six possessions to run away with the 40-14 win against Darby at Mayo-Thompson Stadium on Thursday night.
“Offensively, I’m really happy with the way they played,” said coach J.D. Coursey. “They really came out and set the tone for us. I felt like our quarterback played really well and made the right reads. Defensively, they did what they needed to do all the way to the end.”
Alma hosts Kimmons in another key River Valley Conference contest at Airedale Stadium next week.
Braden Taylor got things started for Alma with a 15-yard touchdown run. Landon Burkhart rushed for two TDs and caught a 59-yard pass for another score. Quarterback Hunter McAlister threw for three touchdowns, each to a different receiver. Levi Burkhart had a 23-yard touchdown reception and Tyler Williamson hauled in a 24-yard TD pass.
Darby scored late in each half. Zion Morris made an athletic leap for a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jett Frazier with 1:06 remaining in the second quarter.
Pablo Garcia had a 53-yard touchdown run late in the game.
Cooper Balkman had a potential 80-yard interception return for a touchdown called back and Williamson intercepted another Frazier pass for the Airedales.
Cedarville 20, Paris 6
The Pirates held off a “scrappy” Paris squad on Thursday night to improve to 6-0 on the season. Darryl Kattich had 15 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Hayden Partain added 16 totes for 68 yards. Bruce Turney finished with 39 yards and had one touchdown with three carries.
Mountainburg 30, Westside 14
Noah Johnson scored a couple of touchdowns as the Dragons held off Westside for another conference win.
Gus Newton intercepted a pass on Westside’s opening drive and returned it to the JCW 34. On the next play, Johnson scored and Newton added the two-point conversion to give Mountainburg the lead.
On the first play of the third quarter, Johnson scored again, this time from 51 yards out and the Dragons led 22-89.
Matthew Hickman added nine-yard TD run with 2:42 left in the first half. Jodin Davidson added the other TD for Mountainburg with a three-yard run with 4:22 remaining.
Westside scored right before the end of both the first and second half.
Chaffin 35, Van Buren 0
The Pointers (2-1) were shutout at home. Van Buren travels to Fort Smith next week to face Ramsey (0-3 River Valley Conference).
Alma 14, Ramsey 7
Last week, the Airedales trailed 7-0 before rallying back to beat the Rams. Landon Burkhart scored the first TD for Alma on a four-yard catch. Burkhart added another touchdown on a nine-yard reception. Jessie Brown caught several key passes to extend drives for the Airedales. Braden Taylor and RJ Billingsley played well on defense according to coach J.D. Coursey. Kevin Mills hauled in an interception and had a “big return” which lead to Alma’s second score.
